Partner Employer Award Ceremony - 21 December, 2012

HMI Consulting Limited is proud to participate in the Partner Employer Award (友商有良) Ceremony on December 21, 2012 via moderating the Partner Employer Case Sharing Session.

The Partner Employer Award (友商有良) is a charity initiative organized by HKGCSMB, aiming to recognize Hong Kong companies that have provided training opportunities to groom local youngsters. The vision of the programmer is to cultivate a caring culture among employers in Hong Kong, while developing younger generations in different industries.  Companies having recruited local graduates were commended as a “友商有良” company and awarded the“友商有良” logo as a recognition. During the Partner Employer Case Sharing Session, Victor Tsang, Partner of HMI Consulting Limited, interviewed the representatives of Dairy Farm International Holdings Limited, Hong Yip Service Limited and Flex-Logic Limited on how they provide learning opportunities to youngsters, showing to the audience that there're many ways to bring up young people even with different company scales. Victor also facilitated the interviewees to share the win-win benefits, challenges and tips on running trainee programs, inspiring the audience that giving opportunities to young people not only benefits the youngsters, but the company itself can be more innovative, while doing good to the society as well.

January 2013 HR Highlights
Economic Highlights

The Census and Statistics Department released the latest employment statistics. Some major figures are as follows:  a.) unemployment rate stood at 3.4% between Sep and Nov 2012, same rate as in the Aug to Oct 2012 period, b.) underemployment rate decreased from 1.5% in the Aug to Oct 2012 period to 1.4% in the Sep to Nov 2012 period, c.) total employment increased by around 1,300 to 3,664,900 persons, d.) increases in unemployment were mainly observed in the financing and insurance, and import and export trade sectors, e.) decreases in unemployment were mainly observed in the wholesale and retail sector, f.) unemployment rate for youths aged 20 to 24 decreased by 1.9 percentage points to 8.4%, g.) unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 19 fell slightly to 14.9%. [Source: China Daily (H2)/HKET (A24), 19 Dec 201212]

Moreover, the Census and Statistics Department also released the consumer price index (CPI) for Nov. The major figures are as follows:  a.) overall consumer prices rose by 3.7% from a year earlier, down from 3.8% in Oct, b.) netting out the effects of all government's one-off relief measures, the year-on-year rate of increase in CPI was 3.8%, same as that in Oct, c.) taking the first 11 months together, CPI rose by 4.1% over a year earlier, d.) year-on-year increases in prices for specific items: housing (5.2%), food (4.2%), private housing rentals (5%) and electricity, gas and water (4.6%). [Source: China Daily (H2)/ HKEJ (A10)/ HKET (A30), 21 Dec 2012]  
According to an HR consultancy, 16% of the 801 employers surveyed forecast an increase in staffing levels in Q1 2013, 4% predict a decrease, and 77% expect no employment changes. Hiring plans are steady in the finance, insurance and real estate sector (17%), followed by wholesale and retail trade, and services sectors (both at 14%). The consultancy forecasted pay rise for next year will be 2% to 4% while more flourishing sectors like retail and construction may see a 5% to 8% pay rise.  [Source: HKEJ (A8 & A23)/HKET (A2), 12 Dec 2012]  
 
Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific flight attendants considered taking industrial action in support of their 5% pay claim after management announced an average 2% pay rise for HK ground and cabin crew. The Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union said they were very disappointed at the pay rise, which they charged was a corporate decision without any negotiation and was below current inflation levels. The union said the management’s decision did not take into account other issues, including housing allowances and improved medical benefits that the union wanted the management to address. Eight unions of the civil aviation industry demand for a pay rise between 4% and 6% to ease labour shortage problem. Separately, transport sector lawmaker Frankie Yick said that there are around 5000 vacancies at the airport in various departments including the logistics, catering and security. He urged the government to consider importing labour for individual sectors.  TVB will cancel the overtime pay cap of $100 from 1 Jan 2013. Overtime pay will be paid at staff normal hourly wage. Whereas in Mainland China, manufacturing activities rose again in Nov as the official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) hit a seven-month high, reinforcing the view that the country's economy is stabilising. The official PMI rose to 50.6 last month from Oct's 50.2, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said. A reading above 50 signals gain in manufacturing while that below 50 points to a contraction. The component indices showed that production rose to 52.5 in Nov from 52.1 in Oct, new orders and new export orders gained 0.8 point and 0.9 point respectively to 51.2 and 50.2, while input prices surprisingly fell to 50.1 from 54.3, signaling a subdued inflation outlook.  [Source: HKEJ (A17)/ Ming Pao Daily (B2)/ Shanghai Daily (online), 2 Dec 2012]
